Text saying "Cross-stitch" made with cross stitches

Cross-stitch

In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I took up cross-stitch to try to help with my mental health. And since then, I haven’t stopped!

So I thought I would collate all the work that I have done throughout the years.

Click on each image, to see the final result of the cross-stitch and some additional information about the project.

Unicorn

Completed cross-stitch of a unicorn head

Additional Info
I don’t know what it is about unicorns, but I just love them. Maybe it’s because their are Scotland’s national animal, or they just look camp as tits!

Blackwork Octopus

Completed cross-stitch of an octopus

I came across this pattern in a magazine, and I had the idea of using glow-in-the-dark and metallic threads. It was my first time using both thread types, and I won’t be in a rush to use them again.

They have a reputation for being difficult threads, and I can understand why. The feel of the GITD thread was slippery, the metallic was coarse, and both were prone to splitting.

Although, I was happy with the final result. Granted, I don’t think the GITD pops in real life as much as it does in the photo, but the outcome is far better than I thought. I feel the shading is more prominent from the GITD.

The question is, should I tackle the other pattern that is now available?

Completed cross-stitch of an octopus highlighting the glow in the dark thread that was used

Xmas 2024

Completed Cross Stitch with the wording "2024 We haven't been replaced by AI...yet"

The inaugural gift I gave to my husby this Christmas.

I enjoy giving these quirky items because they capture the essence of the year. And let’s be honest, AI was definitely at the forefront of making everything look… less than great!

Time for a cup of tea and a good book
Bookmark

CrossStitched bookmark, has a tea cup on top of some books with the text 'Time for a cup of tea and a good book'

After finishing my last cross stitch, I just wanted something quick, so picked up one of the magazines free kits I had lying around.

Now if the pattern said coffee and audiobooks, it would be more me. But then you wouldn’t need a bookmark, would you? Saying that I was gifted a book, so it will be used.

There are two frustrating things about these kits:

  1. The length of the threads is ridiculously too short
  2. The threads aren’t charted to the colours in the pattern

I wanted to do a small project, away from the main one I am working on at the moment.

I have a load of these little projects that you get with the World of Cross Stitching, so thought I would give one of these a go.

X-Files Blackwork

Completed cross stitch of nine squares with images related to the X-Files tv show

As a kid, I was obsessed with The X-Files, so it would only seem fitting that I would do a pattern about the show.

I decided to use some of the glow-in-the-dark thread I had for the X, totally forgetting how annoying it was to work with.

Completed cross stitch of nine squares with images related to the X-Files tv show, but in the dark and the large X is glowing in the dark

Balloon Dog

Xmas 2023

Completed cross-stitch of 3 Christmas trees on fire and the saying "2023 Everywhere's on fire now?"

Additional Info
The traditional Xmas decoration is back.

I did update the pattern slightly as the topic was originally related to the Canada fires, but as the world saw many countries experiencing fires it seemed more apt to change to everywhere!

Disney Roses Castle

Completed cross-stitch of a Disney castle outline filled with disney roses

Additional Info
This was a piece that I picked up every now and then in between projects. It was a little monotonous to complete at times. It is also the first piece where I started to add a signature after completion.

It technically was a gift for the husby as he is a huge Disney fan and avid gardener, but it’s been in my office since completion.

Where my Grinches at?

Completed cross-stitch of a Santa hat with the wording "Where my Grinches at?"

Additional Info
As much as I am not a fan of Xmas, I do appear to do a lot of theme-related projects, don’t I?

Obviously, while our reasons for being miserable arounf the Xmas period may be different, I feel the Grinch and I can relate more.

Ewe are my sunshine

Completed cross-stitch of a landscape filled with sheep and the saying "Ewe are my sunshine"

Additional Info
This kit was a gift from my mum after climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).

It may have been a small pattern, but it was a little bit of a nightmare to complete. Plus, I wasn’t provided with enough thread, so had to buy more to complete it!

Geometric Reindeer

Completed cross-stitch of a reindeer outline made from geometric shapes

Additional Info
You’d think being geomtric shapes it wouldn’t be that difficult to do would you?

For the size of the project, I spent a lot of the time frogging!

Jargon Buster – Frogging is when you make a mistake and you need to remove the stitches. Why frog, I hear you cry? Well frogs make a “ribbit” sound, and we “rip-it” the stitches out. Look I don’t make the rules here

Disney Bambi

Completed cross-stitch of a Disney's Bambi

Additional Info
This kit was a gift, and while I think these kits are a great for beginners they are awful quality. The fabric was just awful to work with!

I also made a stupid mistake, that I didn’t read the instructions properly, and instead of the normal 2 strand stitch, this kit uses 3 strands, so my Bambi looks a little thin!

Sparke Diamond T-Shirt

Completed cross-stitch of a diamond made of blue pink and white colours on a white t-shirt

Additional Info
After my successful attempt of creating and stitching my design, it was now time to stitch onto an item of clothing. The first time I have ever done anything like this.

It wasn’t 100% successful (as it was slightly offset), but it worked and I did get a few compliments when I wore it to the Sparkle Weekend

Additional Info
So I had an idea to use the diamond logo from Sparkle to create a pattern and place it on a t-shirt. So this was my concept, and taking into account I actually had no idea what I was actually doing, I was quite proud on how it came out.

The plan is to sort out the pattern, and place it on sale with all profits going to the charity

Stitch-A-Long 2021

Completed cross-stitch of geometric shapes

Additional Info
I was part of a discord group for cross-stitching for a while, which helped give some hints and tips to improve my skills.

This was the first stitch-a-long (or SAL for short) that I did. A SAL is when a group of stitchers do the same pattern together. Parts of the patter are dropped at regular intervals.

I quite enjoyed doing it, as it was interesting to see how other people used different clothes/threads for the same project
