Eurovision | Will we be singing the Blues again?

It has been announced that reunited pop group Blue will be the UK’s entry into Eurovision for 2011. This shall be the first time that the UK has sent an “established, international successful group” into the competition.

I am not going to deny that Blue were popular…in their heyday. But they weren’t “successful” like The Beatles, Queen or even Take That.  There last album to enter the charts was in 2004, which isn’t exactly current is it? The music industry has moved on since then and the majority of people outside the UK, and probably in it, will most likely of forgotten about them.

It is clear that there is a hidden agenda here for the group, since they reformed (after failed solo attempts) and are using Eurovision as a platform to get the group back to where it were. And who can blame them? Isn’t that why the majority, if not all, the singers/groups do Eurovision for? Out of curiosity…who of the recent entries have been successful? Jade Ewen, the closest we have coming to winning in a long time, has joined Sugababes which has had more line-up changes than there had been Dr Who’s? How successful have they been since she joined? Enough said!!!

Snapshot of a tweet from Duncan James on January 29 2011: "Its about time we took eurovision seriously as were the only country in europe that doesn't. Lets try & change that, but we need ur support!!"

Not since 1997 did the UK last win the Eurovision, with Katrina and the Waves blaring out. Is it really about time that we took it all serious and try to win this competition?

In all honestly…no. I think it is too late to try to take this mockery of a singing competition too seriously.

Firstly, this is not a singing contest. It is all political show. Ask anyone, they know that this is true. Look at the countries that always vote for their neighbours. Then there is the Eastern bloc against the Western bloc. And dare I mention the war in which the UK spent the majority of it at the bottom of the table.

Secondly, the show is camp (hence why it has a huge gay following). Campness is about not taking yourself seriously. Taking yourself seriously in shows like this is just asking for trouble.

There is one good thing that comes from this announcement; the BBC do not need to punish themselves by putting on the Butlins talent show, aka Your Country Needs You. These have just been terrible of recent.

Do I think we will get nul points? No, I don’t think we could be that unlucky?

Do I think we will win? I haven’t heard the song yet, but no…this is the Eurovision after all. However, it would be nice to win it again.

So good luck Blue!!! I think you will need it!!!
