The I Should Be So Lucky musical is based on the music from Stock Aitken & Waterman (SAW), which uses a plethora of tunes from their back catalogue, but concentrates on one of their biggest stars…Kylie!
For years there have been whisperings that a musical using Kylie’s back catalogue is on the books. This is the closest I think we will see for a long time!
Obviously, I had to go and see this, but was it worth the hype?
What is it about?
It starts brutally, with the bride, Ella, being jilted at the alter on their wedding day.
Upset and not wanting to waste a honeymoon, the bride and her bridal party head off to Turkey, where it appears romance is still on the cards.
Meanwhile, the groom, Nathan, has learnt that he misunderstood what his dad told him, and now wants his jilted bride back. So heads out to Turkey too to apologise.
Arriving in Turkey, he has a fight on his hands as there is a new love interest to contend with. Additionally, there is something in the water, or should I say Kylie Wine, as everyone appears to be horny and vying for love.
Obviously, there is a happy ending to this tale. Actually, a happy ending for all, like they were being given out at a buy one get one free sale!

My verdict of the musical
If you want something serious and gritty, then this show is not for you. It literally oozes the British humour, with tongue firmly in cheek. I would even say that “camptastic” doesn’t even cover what this show is like.
I was fully aware that Kylie Minogue was to appear in the musical as a hologram. I would say I was a little surprised by how much she was involved. She was quite integral to the show, as Ella needed the support of talking into a mirror to an imaginary Kylie, more than her friends and family couldn’t give.
However, the brand dropping of Kylie Wine felt forced and cringey. It really didn’t have to be there. Honestly, it felt like the the production team behind the musical had been watching early series of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and how they could plug the products!
Also, can we stop and talk about the rediculous prices that Opera House were selling Kylie Wine for? We know there is going to be a markup, but it was over 350% and took me by surprise!
Could I see this being a movie? Yes. I think it has the opportunity to be a British version of Mamma Mia. Would it be as good? Probably not!
Songs
The music was what we were all here for. It was a large part of the UK music scene in the 80s/90s. Like this musical, it was not music to take seriously. It was all about money making!
I will be honest, I have only started to fall back in love with the SAW music. I just felt like it just didn’t age well. But I am at the age now, where nostalgia is kicking in!
I do feel that the show was more a megamix than a greatest hits kind of show, which is a little disappointing. It was as if there was a lyric or two in a track that met with the storyline and that was all they were going to use.
However, I still had a gay old time, as did the rest of the audience. It is definitely worth a watch…once!
