It’s Official – Mobile Internet Is Now Limited!!!

To coincide with the release of the iPhone 4, the mobile networks have announced that mobile internet is going to be limited to 1GB (except Orange which has always had a limit of 750k MB).

I previously posted a blog in relation to this exact subject where I criticised the use of ‘unlimited’ by mobile phone operators as it never has been and never would be unlimited as there has always been a limit of 1GB applied to your contract.

So what does this change in the wording actually mean? There are two things that I can see happening:

Firstly, psychologically some people are going to become more aware of having a limit on their data browsing. This could see a reduction of use from certain users to prevent them from breaching the limit. It’s more likely to be people who are nowhere near the limit set by the mobile operator. In effect saving the company money.

Secondly, the people who do occasionally go over the limit will start to see that they are charged for excess usage where before they may have got away from it. What the limit will be I don’t know. Those who regularly go over the limit will already be receiving charges, so the only slight change is that now everyone will be charged.

Don’t get me wrong, as I stated previously I understand why operators have a limit on use, my complaint was that they pretended to state that use was unlimited when it wasn’t. I think the move to omit unlimited from their promotional information is brilliant. Now we just have to see it for other things such as text messages/phone calls!!!
