A couple of months have passed and I’m finally sitting down to write May’s ‘Today is all about’ post. In my defence, I have had quite a busy few months.
The beginning of the month, I was dealing with a few low moments, but with the support of friends and family, I was able to overcome this.
Additionally, this month also saw me do something that I haven’t done in a long time…enter a 10km run.
At work, there had been a discussion about entering the Manchester 10km run. I did say that I would do it but never got round to entering, let alone start the training.
The Friday before the run, my manager provided me with a race pack. I’ll be honest, I may have been a little sick in my mouth. 2 days before the run and I hadn’t run for over a year!
So you’d think with all this lack of preparation, that I’d do something to help prepare. A nice relaxing evening with friends…drinking alcohol, the day before the race is probably not the wisest decision I’ve made!!!
The day of the race was a mixture of dread and regret. It was one of the hottest days we’ve had, so I wasn’t really looking forward to running in it. Thankfully, I don’t suffer from hangovers although drinking the day before isn’t good for dehydration.
I won’t lie, the run itself wasn’t the best. A couple of kilometres into the race I started to suffer from backache. A few times throughout the race, I decided that a little walk was needed to give myself some time to recover from the pain.
The heat also didn’t help. I was overheating doing the run, but total kudos to the organisers who put steps into place to reduce injuries/help people.
All I wanted to do, taking into account that I haven’t done a race since 2009, is just finish. Taking into account no training and the sesh the night before, I think this was the wisest choice on how to tackle it.
However, apart of me also wanted to try and finish within the hour. This would be a lot slower than when I used to finish 10km, but I felt that this was still an achievable target taking into account all the factors.
And guess what? I did it! I completed the race sub 59 minutes, which I am totally happy with.
I had so much fun doing the race, that I am even tempted to do it again next year!!!
